How To Keep Office Carpets Clean

The carpets in your office see a lot of traffic and this will make them prone to collecting dirt. The problem is that dirty carpets can affect the way your business is viewed and how healthy your employees are. To prevent this, you need to know how to keep your office carpets looking their best.

Take Preventative Steps

Prevention is generally the first place you should start when keeping your carpets clean. When you take the right preventative steps, you will reduce the amount of cleaning needed and it is cheaper than getting new carpets. The preventative measures that you take will vary depending on your office and the professional aesthetic you are looking for.

The first preventative step that you should take is to have rugs both inside and outside the doors that lead into the office. These rugs will collect dirt from shoes before they hit the rest of the carpets. The outdoor rugs will need to be durable enough to withstand the weather and both need to be heavy duty.

Rugs should also be placed in the areas of the office that get the most traffic. These areas are generally your hallways and the foyer. Break rooms should also have rugs if you have carpets in them. When placing rugs in the hallways, you should use long runners which create uniformity.

Do Not Drag Equipment Over The Carpet

When moving office equipment around, it is very tempting to drag it into place. This is something that you need to avoid if you want to keep your carpets in good condition. Dragging heavy equipment will damage the padding on the underside of the carpet resulting in stretching and tearing.

The office furniture that needs to be moved regularly should be placed on rugs or plastic mats. This includes office chairs which catch carpet fibres and wear it down. When you are arranging furniture that does not have wheels, you need to pick it up or place it on a trolley.

Prevent Spills

Food and drink spills will stain your carpet and can be a nightmare to get out. One of the best ways to avoid these spills is to have a no food or drink policy in areas that you want to keep clean. This could mean not allowing employees to have food or drinks at their desks or preventing customers from bringing this into the office.

If you implement this policy for your employees, you will need to provide an area for them to enjoy their food and drinks. These areas should have hard floors which are easier to clean than carpets. If you are unable to implement this policy, you will need to use other preventative measures to keep your carpets clean.

Have The Carpets Cleaned Weekly

It is impossible to stop all dirt from hitting your carpets and the only option will be to clean them. It is recommended that you have the carpets cleaned once a week. Of course, if your office has a lot of traffic, you might want the high traffic areas to be cleaned more often.

During this cleaning, the carpets should be vacuumed and brushed with a carpet sweeper or broom. This will remove the surface dirt from the carpet and some of the deeper dirt. You also need to move furniture that you can to get the dirt, dust and other debris which can damage and dirty your carpets.

When vacuuming the carpets, you need to make use of the attachments to get into the corners. Vacuuming around the baseboards is also important because this is where dust and dirt are trapped. The weekly clean is also a good time to spot clean the carpets.

When spot cleaning, you will only deep clean the areas that have been stained or are extremely dirty. Chemical cleaners can be used for this, but you will need to be careful and ensure that it does not damage the carpet. Natural cleaners are often recommended, but you still need to test them on an out of sight area first.

Get Deep Steam Clean

Weekly cleaning will help you keep on top of all the dirt in the carpets, but you need to have a deep clean as well. The deep clean does not have to be done very regularly and experts recommend having this done every 6 months. You will need to call a professional carpet cleaning experts to handle the deep clean.

Ideally, you will want to use a company that deep steam cleans the carpets. Steam cleaning is gentler than chemical cleaning and will kill any bacteria lurking in the carpet fibres. The steam will also remove deep-seated dirt and stains without damaging the colouring of the carpet.

Keeping your office carpets clean can be easier than you imagine. Taking preventative steps is important, but you also need to have the carpets deep cleaned every 6 months.

Carpet Cleaning Mistakes You Can Avoid

Having a clean home with clean carpets is something we all want but thinking that cleaning your carpets is easy or can be done by just anyone isn’t really accurate.  Before you book someone in to clean your carpets or even trying to do it yourself you need to know what the best method is for prolonging the life of your carpet.  Here are some carpet cleaning mistakes that you can avoid.

Leave Stains to Set

If you have a family then things are going to get spilled on your carpet, it is inevitable, but it needs to be cleaned right away.  Liquids like coffee or juice can seep deep down into your fibers leaving smells and even allowing mold to grow.  Having dirt and stains in your carpet can break down the small fibers ruining your carpet.  If something gets spilled then it needs to be cleaned immediately to avoid having to replace your carpets too soon.

Scrubbing at Stains

Once you get a stain in your carpet you may be tempted to scrub at it to remove it, not the best idea.  Yes, scrubbing will probably take out the stain but at the same time you are grinding away at the fibers and that damages them.  You are better off blotting the stain with some towels, let the towels absorb the material and then you can try a chemical stain remover to get the rest out.  Here is the proper way to remove stains from carpet.

Too Much Water When You Clean

Using too much water when you steam clean your carpets leaves you with a big mess that is really hard to soak up and then you can end up with mold.  If this happens you’re going to have to try and dry your carpets with your steam cleaner.  Be very careful of the cleaning products that you use and don’t add more than the recommended amount of the solution.  Some of them if they are not diluted properly can damage your carpet fibers.  Some of these chemicals can be toxic in sufficient amounts so only use what the label recommends.

Not Hiring a Carpet Cleaning Company

A lot of homeowners don’t want to pay for the services of a carpet cleaning company thinking it is cheaper to do it themselves.  Not necessarily the case, there is a lot of work involved plus the expense or renting all of the equipment and buying the detergents that you need. A carpet cleaner already has all of that stuff plus they have the expertise to remove pet odors and everyday stains that happen. For example when we interviews an expert carpet cleaning company and they told us that the actual cost to fix a DIY carpet cleaning job can actually cost one and a half time to double the normal cost. As the mess that was made needs to be fixed. And depending on how bad the DIY job was, it might not be fixable and new carpet will be needed.

DIY Carpet Cleaning Versus Professional Carpet Cleaning

It is time to clean your carpets and you are debating whether you should do it yourself or pay to have professionals come in and do it for you.  Let’s look at the pros and cons of DIY carpet cleaning versus professional carpet cleaning and see which works the best for you.

DIY Carpet Cleaning

Typically when you do your own carpet cleaning it involves heading to the supermarket or hardware store and renting a machine to clean your carpets.  First of all you should be vacuuming your carpets on a regular basis to reduce the amount of dust, dirt and debris that accumulates in your carpet.  It will help maintain the condition of your carpets and keep the air in your home cleaner as well.

Once you have rented your machine you’re going to need to get some carpet cleaning solution as well.  Be very cautious about adding the solution to the steamer, you don’t want to add too much or you can damage your carpets.  If you have stains on your carpet you may also need to purchase a stain remover to help get heavy soiled areas cleaned.  Also bear in mind that it will be up to you to move around all of your furniture so that you can get under tables and couches.  Always check with the manufacturer to make sure it is safe to steam clean your carpets.

Professional Carpet Cleaning

A carpet cleaning company has the equipment on hand to get your carpets cleaned such as the professional Flawless Carpet Cleaning company, along with actually knowing how to professionally clean carpets and avoid mishaps. They also know the right detergents and techniques to use to remove any stains that may be there.  These guys are professionally trained and have plenty of experience in getting your carpets looking like the day they were installed.

Most people choose the DIY method because they are afraid of the costs of a professional carpet cleaning company.  If you shop around you will find that they are more affordable than you think, especially when you consider the time and the amount of work involved in doing it yourself.  Most companies will price the job based on the amount of square feet and the condition of your carpets.  They will also take care of moving your furniture out of the way and then putting it all back once they are done.

Your Choice

Whether you want to get pros in to clean the carpets or go the DIY route is ultimately up to you.  That being said DIY is a lot more work than you think and professional carpet cleaners cost less than you expect.  It may well be worth it just to let the pros handle it, they are quicker have better equipment and you won’t strain your back trying to move your bookcases.
